Idle thoughts
With the tremendous growth of photography as a hobby that the layman can participate in now that the digital age has brought this expensive high brow art form down to the realm of possibility for us mere working class mortals the manufacturers are bringing greater and greater performance in to our eager hands and smarter and smarter packages that will help get the studied results out of the hands of a recreational shooter.
The camera evolution is going two directions at once and is quite able to sustain both developmental directions as technology evolves. The DSLR is king and will remain on top of the heap for some time to come I would speculate. The SLR system has been in development and refinement for the better part of 60 years since the historic East German Contax S, from 1949 which had the first pentaprism for eye level viewing to the most modern of DSLR technology such as the Canon 1DMk4 and Nikon D3s
The focus continues to be on building phenomenal point and shoot cameras for the consumer and prosumer markets and one of the latest developments is the micro 4/3 cameras with interchangeable lenses. These cameras promise to be the hybrid between the serious shooter DSLR and the snap shot master point and shoot with a good compromise in performance for portability.
Ultimatly the gear that we use is just the tool for the final product. I don’t think that Leonardo DeVinci ran out to get the latest high tech brush to do the job, although I am sure that he was using what he felt was the best equipment to do the job.
I think that the future of the hobby is going to dwindle for the big cameras as potentially fewer people are inclined to drop the serious money for DSLR’s in favor of the more cost effective options that all the manufacturers are bringing to the market. You don’t need the perfect optical formula for pictures of the family outing and snaps of the kids. That sort of lens will stay in the realm of the professional and documentary shooters.
I must confess that I do dream of a better camera body for the latitude that it would afford me in the post production end of the photographic experience, greater dynamic range and better high iso performance are what all us digital guys dream of.
