'Evil Twin' WiFi Scare Stories Make A Comeback

    from the missing-the-point dept

A few years ago, when stories hyping up the security risks of WiFi were commonplace, articles about "evil twin" access points were a favorite. "Evil twins" were access points given SSIDs that made them appear legitimate, only they were controlled by a malicious actor rather than a real hotspot provider. The FUD was then that these malicious actors could steal anything that went across the access point -- even though most sensitive information is transmitted with encryption, a point the articles never bothered to mention. It looks like the evil twin -- or at least hype about it -- is making a comeback, as the head of a trade group of IT security professionals says such attacks are on the rise. He says it's due to the growth in the use of WiFi, but doesn't offer up any real evidence that the attacks are a problem, just saying that they present a risk for people's passwords that are sent as clear text, skipping over the fact that any service provider worth their salt doesn't send passwords in the clear if they're protecting any sort of sensitive information. Instead of harping on about a largely mythical "problem" with WiFi, wouldn't this guy's energy be better spent drawing service providers' attention to the need to encrypt passwords, thereby cutting out the supposed problem?

As a fan I post this

Guerilla marketing for Firefly and Serenity is a continually evolving endeavor. Though a theatrical sequel to "Serenity" would be mighty damn fine, it may serve the project, and the fans, better to try another direction. There are a lot of ways to deliver entertainment now, and the landscape is branching out all the time. Many fans have been building a groundswell to bring Firefly back as a direct to DVD, an HBO type series, or even (yes!) a television mini-series. (A mini-series of about 24 episodes a season would suit me fine... heh...) Even Mr. Whedon his own self has let it be known that if television approached him with the right proposition, well, heck, he wouldn't kick it out of bed! (Okay, not a direct quote, but that's the gist pretty much.)

    Why Guerilla Marketing?

Guerilla marketing the Firefly and Serenity DVDs is still an extremely effective way to continue to build the fanbase... and the more fans we have, the more incentive for our shiny 'verse to return on a more regular basis. Remember, with each new person who discovers Firefly/Serenity on DVD, we stand an excellent chance of gaining another fan. We see it all the time on the message boards. Folks find FF/S on DVD and become deeply drawn in to the stories, performances and oh, that gorgeous cast. Sometimes it happens so quickly and completely, the person is genuinely surprised... but happy! And with each new fan we have a person who will then tell friends, family, co-workers, startled strangers waiting in line for coffee, and so forth, about this amazing show. It works, we KNOW it does... it's a big part of why fans get a shiny movie from a short-lived TV show. (Helps to have a guy at the helm who's the right kind of crazy to not give up too.) So let's keep it goin'. Now go forth and GUERILLA! Thanks. Yer Art Companion ~ 11th Hour

Nevada may not have the highest murder rate, but...

What state and city rankings publisher Morgan Quitno Press reveals in its annual list of the most dangerous states to live in.

States are compared against the national average for six dastardly crimes, each carrying equal weight.

Next: The No. 1 Most Dangerous State

    No. 1 -- Nevada

Nevada may not have the highest murder rate, but its crime rankings across the board offer the highest odds of a crime against you and your family.

    Rankings by Crime

    Murder: 3
    Rape: 11
    Robbery: 2
    Assault: 13
    Burglary: 7
    Motor Vehicle Theft: 1

And the all love to talk crap about California out here in Nevada

    No. 9 -- California

Even though California makes the top 12 list for Most Dangerous States, the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice states that crime rates in California have fallen over the last two decades.

    Rankings in Crime

    Murder: 10
    Rape: 38
    Robbery: 5
    Assault: 17
    Burglary: 23
    Motor Vehicle Theft: 5

So I guess Nevada is number one after all. Number one for crooks..
